"Orthogonal Picturesque: the Irregular Rationality of La Chaux-de-Fonds" was originally presented at the 14th National Conference on Planning History, Society for American City and Regional Planning History Baltimore, MD, November 2011. Initial archival and site research was funded by University of North Carolina atCharlotte (Faculty Research Grant program, 2010). This paper examines the unique urban fabric of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the birthplace and initial training ground of Charles Edouard Jeanneret (Le Corbusier). It posits the “watchmaking urbanism” of the region (recognized by UNESCO as a World heritage Site) as a missing link between the Enlightenment Project and the Modernity Project. It analyzes the fabric of the city as well as its effect on the evolution of Jeanneret/Le Corbusier’s architectural and urban ideas. Its original analytical drawings lay bare the influences that the architect sought to suppres. Complete text and illustrations coming soon.
